How To Dress For That First Date

Is there anything as important as making a great first impression? This is exactly what makes first dates so darn stressful: you want to look great, but you don’t want to look too sexy, but you don’t want to look too old and dowdy either. So how can you look fabulous and chic without looking floppy and cheap?

Think About Where you are Going

If you have been told where you are going, or if you feel comfortable asking your date where he is planning on taking you, you can get an idea of what sort of attire you will have to wear. For example, if you’re going on a hike, you definitely won’t be wearing your little black dress and heels. But if you happen to be going to a baseball or out for a casual lunch on a beautiful summer day, then a cute sun dress paired with a great pair of low heels or flats will work fabulously.

Think About Shoes

Again, it’s important to know where you are going or what you are doing when choosing your shoes. If you are going to a place where you will primarily be sitting down the whole night, such as going out for dinner with no dancing afterwards, then definitely wear your sexiest pair of stilettos. If you will be walking on a boardwalk or strolling through a park, put on a lower pair of heels, a sexy pair of sandals or flats. If he happens to be active and you suspect that you will be doing something outdoors, then throw on a pair of running shoes (or at least tuck them away in an oversized bag or the trunk of your car). Comfort should always go over style when on a date, but make sure that your comfortable shoes are still cute.

The Little Black Dress

This dress will be a lifesaver at so many different points of your life. The little black dress can be worn on that first date to really impress your date if you are going out for a more formal dinner. Pair it with a fantastic heel and a great necklace, and you’re good to go. You can save this dress for a party later, for lunch, or you can even wear it when shopping with the girls. The little black dress should be versatile and have the ability to be both dressed up and dressed down for any occasion you need it for.

Coffee and Lunch Dates

If your date has decided to take you out for coffee or lunch, great! This gives you the excuse to dress more casually too. Depending on the season, you can pull off a cute spring-like dress during the spring and summer and toss on a pair of flip flops. Fall and winter give you the great excuse of wearing your hot pair of new jeans topped with a great top and boots, or you can even throw on a skirt if it’s not too cold outside yet. Keep your makeup natural and flattering, and make sure your hair looks absolutely fabulous. He’ll have no choice but to ask you out on a date again!
